Starting in the late-20th century, Manhattan’s Chinatown has served as a critical landing point for new immigrants. Today, it has the largest ethnic Chinese population in the Western hemisphere. Gateway to America centers the recent protests against the construction of a new 300-foot-tall jail in Chinatown in a history of cross-racial activism and community building in America. As a community that has endured centuries of destruction and discrimination but also strength and solidarity, Manhattan’s Chinatown fights to remain rooted—resisting gentrification and displacement—in the years to come.
